Ford’s new model roll-out continues, with the Next-Gen Everest breaking cover this week. Built on the same revised T6 chassis as Ranger, the new Everest has, according to Ford, been built for the adventurous family.
“When we started imagining the Next-Gen Everest, we started not at the beginning but at the end: With our customers,” said Ian Foston, chief platform engineer for Everest. “They’re people who like adventure, recreation and being able to go out with family and friends. Whether they’re conquering sand, rocks or city life, these customers appreciate the utility, capability and spaciousness of an SUV.”
Powering Ford’s new adventure wagon, depending on the spec level you choose, is either a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel or, the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel available in the current Ranger/Everest line-up. Both engines are backed by Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission.
Ford’s engineers have added 50mm to the Everest’s track, which they claim improves the ride and driving experience. Additionally, they’ve beefed up the cooling systems for each engine and the front and rear axle load ratings, which in turn has allowed a 3,500kg tow rating, when fitted with the optional factory Tow Pack, which now includes an integrated brake controller. In the somewhat ridiculous world of tow-rating tit-for-tat, the Everest now outguns the Prado.
One particularly cool feature for the vanistas out there is the trailer light check function, that runs all of the lights through a continual test loop, so that you no longer have to sit in the driver’s seat and manually operate the lights, while Mum yells at you from out the back of the Jayco.
Everest is offered with two drivetrain options, including 4×2 which is available on Ambiente and Trend and 4×4 which is available across the range and features a permanent four-wheel drive system that uses an electronically controlled on-demand two-speed electromechanical transfer case (EMTC) with selectable drive modes.
Wading depth is quoted as up to 800mm and the top-spec Platinum is available with an off-road package that includes more sensible 18” wheels and steel underbody protection.
Everest’s new integrated roof rails, and the stand-off roof rails specific to the top-spec Platinum have been engineered to support static loads of up to 350kg and dynamic loads of up to 100kg.
The Australian range includes four specification levels, starting with the entry-level Ambiente, and followed by Trend, Sport and the flagship Platinum.
